Christmas in Cornwall

The John Lewis ad has aired and now I’m allowed to talk about Christmas without being loudly scolded by the rest of the office… phew.

Christmas time in Cornwall has a truly special feeling, and that’s not just the mulled wine speaking. Our small and sleepy fishing villages come alive with dazzling light displays and their own centuries-old (if often puzzling) festive traditions. In date order, here are some of the highlights (pun intended):

Truro, Cornwall’s capital (and only) city, celebrates in style on the 23rd of November at 7pm with its Truro City of Lights festival. A procession of lanterns made by local schools, community centres and local artists, this year with the theme ‘Tell Me a Story’, marches its way through the city centre accompanied by music and dance. This is a brilliant family night out, guaranteed.

Porthleven’s lights line the harbour and only add to the magic of this wonderful village. The will be switched on at 6.30pm on the 2nd of December and will be accompanied by fireworks and, of course, a visit from the big red guy.

The village of Angarrack, which is 30 minutes by car from Mousehole and just 20 from Porthleven, is known locally as a hidden gem when it comes to Christmas lights. Every year this small community pulls it out the bag, or should I say ‘sack’, with a twinkling illustration of the twelve days of Christmas, which is switched on at 7pm the 3rd of December.

Newlyn has it all this year with lights, fireworks and even Father Christmas riding on the back of a Lifeboat… what more do you want? This is all taking place on the 16th of December with the lights being switched on at 6pm and the fireworks display at 7.30pm.

Mousehole, famous for Mouser the cat and his storm-soothing purr, switches on its 7000+ lights on the 17th of December at 7pm. The illuminated shapes of fishing boats, sea creatures, Christmas trees – not mention Stargazy pie – can be seen dotted in and around this deeply romantic harbour.

To help get you into the festive spirit, we’re offering up to 20% OFF remaining Christmas weeks in our cottages:
