The Flete Estate – Luxury holiday cottages in South Devon
The Flete Estate in South Devon is the most spectacular setting for a holiday by the sea. It is designated an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, Heritage coast and Site of Special Scientific Interest and is alive with wonderful wild flowers, birds and animals.
The self catering cottages include a mill cottage, a row of coastguards cottages right above the beach, a gamekeeper’s cottage in the woods, and a Grade 11 listed house sleeping 18, and all but one welcome dogs. Most are within 10 minutes walk of the unspoilt Erme estuary, with its sandy beaches, gentle surf, and the South West Coastal footpath. You can enjoy walking, bird watching, fishing, star gazing, photography or messing about in boats, without even leaving the Estate.
Out of Season
The Flete Estate is spectacular at any time of the year. The self catering cottages are all warm and cosy whatever the weather, with real log fires in all of them, and plenty of sensible places for boots and coats. With the roads much quieter this can be the perfect time to visit South Devon and The Flete Estate will have just the cottage for you.
The perfect beach, Mothecombe, is at the mouth of the Erme estuary. It is owned and maintained by the Flete Estate and has remained completely unspoilt, with the only buildings being an old boathouse and the lime kiln. With its soft golden sand, a little stream, rock pools and small secluded coves revealed at low tide, the beach slopes gently into the sea.
Film at Flete
The Flete Estate has provided a location for several popular period films, including Ang Lee’s Sense and Sensibility, Emilia Fox’s Rebecca, Ioan Gruffydd’s Hornblower and Shakespeare’s Lives creative film series Miranda’s Letter. Latest film My Cousin Rachel Daphne du Maurier. It is also still attracting attention of makers of the Rosamunde Pilcher films, and the comic strip “the Hunt for Tony Blair”.
Set in the South Hams between Dartmoor and the sea, the Flete Estate’s woodlands, pastures, amenity and agricultural land enfold the beautiful Erme estuary. This unspoilt stretch of coast with its safe beaches, streams and rock pools, is one of the few to remain in private ownership. More information
