About the area

The lodges are close to the Dedham Vale and Stour Valley Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. The area is famously linked to a number of painters including Constable, Gainsborough and Munnings. You can visit Flatford Mill which features in a number of Constable paintings and Gainsborough grew up in Sudbury which now houses a museum dedicated to his life. Munnings lived in Dedham and his former house and studio are now a museum for his work.

Colchester is a short drive from Wakes Colne and has an impressive Norman keep to explore along with detail of the history of the area. Colchester zoo has important primate and cat collections and lots of interest for a great day out. If you fancy seeing more wildlife and farm animals up close head to Jimmy's Farm.

Further afield the Suffolk Heritage coast is worth a visit. The Victorian seaside towns of Aldeburgh and Southwold have something from everyone with lots of good restaurants, pubs and independent shops. The saxon burial ground at Sutton Hoo has some beautiful walks and the opportunity to see the replica of the long ship and the treasures.
