Gill Beck Barn - Luxury Barn With Views, Cumbria

The North West offers some of the most beautiful landscapes in England, and a stay at Gill Beck Barn puts you right at the heart of the scenery. Set in its own enclosed and extensive garden, the property has views of the rolling Pennine fells in one direction and the Lake District National Park in the other. You’re in the perfect place if you enjoy outdoor pursuits like sailing, quad biking or pony trekking, and if you’re a keen walker, there’s everything from rugged mountain hikes to sedate lakeside strolls.

The heart of the property is the large, open plan kitchen and living space, with a wood burning stove and an Aga to keep you cosy and warm. Each of the bedrooms has its own en-suite room and there’s a sandstone patio for a spot of al fresco dining too. The downstairs is completely step-free, so Gill Beck Barn could be ideal for anyone with limited mobility.

The property is set just up the lane from the popular fellside village of Melmerby, with a lovely pub, a village shop and a tea room, as well as independent shops and an indoor pool. If you’d like to venture further afield, the sinuous Ullswater Lake is just 11 miles away, with its historic steamer boats, not to mention the daffodils that inspired the poet William Wordsworth.

Also available to book at this location is Todd Hills Hall Farmhouse (sleeps 12 guests).

About the area

This area is steeped in myths and legends, and one particularly evocative attraction is Long Meg and her Daughters, the country’s second largest stone circle. Twelve feet tall, Long Meg stands watch beyond the stone circle itself, with three mysterious symbols carved into her stone. Situated at the northern end of Ullswater Lake, Pooley Bridge is a small village from where you can catch the Ullswater Steamboats. You can also explore this long and beautiful lake under your own steam – there are a number of places where you can hire canoes. Penrith is the largest town in the Eden district, and was first granted market charter back in 1223. There are still plenty of shops and restaurants to discover during your stay. If you’re here in the early spring, one truly unique event is ‘Penrith Goes Orange’, when the whole town does exactly that. Make sure to bring something orange to blend in. This is farming country and there are plenty of shows that celebrate the countryside. Westmorland Show, Skelton Show and Lowther Show are the three main events, with everything from prize livestock to vintage tractors on display. You might see some Cumberland & Westmorland wrestling while you’re here. If you fancy a spot of culture, Keswick’s Theatre by the Lake is in a beautiful setting next to Derwent Water and puts on a variety of drama and family shows. In February and March, Keswick also hosts its own Film Festival with an eclectic range of films to see. This being border country, there are lots of castles to visit while you’re here. Lowther Castle is a spectacular ruin that originally boasted a room for every day of the year. Dalemain House and Gardens is a beautiful stately mansion that hosts a marmalade festival every year. And for the border fortification par excellence, Hadrian’s Wall is a must-see. For the longest continuous stretch of wall, head north for Birdoswald Roman Fort.
