Merry Hill Barn - Thatch Luxury Cottage In Dorset

It’s not often you get the chance to stay in a movie location. Merry Hill Barn featured in the 2015 movie “Far From the Madding Crowd”, based on Thomas Hardy’s novel of the same name. It’s been completely refurbished since then, with lots of modern comforts and amenities, such as Bosch appliances in the kitchen and a 65″ flat screen Freesat television in the sitting room. There’s still a sense of the original country dwelling though, with exposed stone walls and original beams, however Merry Hill cleverly combines comfort, traditional features and modern style and with cosy underfloor heating throughout.

The barn conversion offers ‘upside-down’ living with three large bedrooms on the ground floor, and the sitting room and kitchen area reachable via a beautiful oak staircase. The sitting room has a contemporary living flame wall-hung fire, and the kitchen boasts Minerva work tops as well as a large American fridge/freezer. There is seating for six guests at the dining table plus three bar stools for relaxed seating at the kitchen island. All the bathrooms have sensor lighting and fluffy Egyptian cotton bath sheets. The hallway downstairs has patio doors which open out onto the lawned garden, fully enclosed with a stone wall and five bar gate, and with the beautiful Dorset landscape beyond. Just across the fields are a pub, farm shop and café, and within easy reach are the pretty Dorset villages of Portesham, Abbotsbury and Langton Herring.

About the area

A nearby village to Merry Hill Barn is Abbotsbury, where there are plenty of shops and a number of visitor attractions like the Swannery and the Children’s Farm. The Subtropical Gardens here have won awards and there are lots of exotic and unusual flowers on display. The restaurant’s good too! Abbotsbury Swannery is nearby providing the unique experience of feeding swans and in May and June admiring the newborn cygnets. The village also has a Children’s Farm where little ones can enjoy cuddling guinea pigs, pony riding, goat racing and burning off energy in the soft play pirate ship.

Weymouth is an attractive seaside town with Georgian buildings lining the harbour. If you’re bringing the little ones, Weymouth Sea Life Adventure Park gives them the chance to be a pirate or a mermaid for the day, while they learn about the magical creatures off the southern coast. Speaking of the coast, you’re never far away from the sea at Merry Hill Barn.

The Jurassic Coast is world-famous as one of the best places to find fossils and evidence of the prehistoric past. There are plenty of fascinating finds on display at the Lyme Regis Museum. If you’d prefer to hunt for your own fossils, you can take a guided walk along the coastline. They take about three hours or so, but can get booked up quickly.

Other must-see sights along this unique coastline include Durdle Door and Lulworth Cove. Both of these fascinating and photogenic features have been carved out by the sea over millions of years. If you’d like to add some adrenaline to your experience of the great outdoors, coasteering is guaranteed to get the heart pumping. Climb up rocks and cliffs and then jump into the water below. Guides at Lulworth Outdoors know the best places to explore.

To the east is the popular seaside town of Weymouth, with its Georgian seafront, 17th century harbour, Sea Life Adventure Park and Tower, Punch and Judy shows and donkey rides.

The Hive Beach at Burton Bradstock and its café, serving fresh local seafood and home made cakes is also nearby.

Further west is the bustling market town of Bridport and the colourful, pretty town of Lyme Regis, with gentle waters for bathing, ideal for children.

The county town of Dorchester is only a 20 minute drive away with its large selection of shops, restaurants, cafes, museums and two cinemas.
