About the area

Situated just 3 miles south of Bude and accessible along the South West Coast Path is Widemouth Bay, which offers fantastic conditions to learn surfing or body-boarding, which is why many of the local surf schools are based there. Widemouth Bay stretches for 1.5 miles, made up of sand and shingle and backed with grassy dunes. The beach is really popular with young families, with lifeguards during the main peak seasons and plenty of facilities, shops and cafes.

Surrounded by beautiful beaches and wonderful walks, Bude has so much to offer; whether you are looking for a romantic retreat, fun filled family holiday or a relaxing week away. A five minute walk from the town is the stunning Summerleaze Beach; home to Bude Sea Pool, a partially man-made tidal pool created to provide a haven for safe wild swimming.

The historical Bude Canal is ideal for a gentle stroll with the whole family. This unique waterway is a great way to see all sorts of wildlife, either from the footpath or you can hire a boat and row down the canal; a lovely way to enjoy a few leisurely hours.

Love nature and history? Then don’t miss your chance to visit Lundy Island. The wildlife here is often compared to that of the Galapagos islands. Along the 3 mile walk from coast to coast, visitors can take in roughly 4000 years’ worth of human history. The monuments and listed buildings range from the remains of the Bronze Age settlement to a Victorian Church.

Spend a day discovering the Hidden Valley Discovery Park. Find your way through the maze up to the treehouse, explore the Forbidden Mansion with its upside-down dining room and shrinking corridor, then wander through the burrows to find the magical village of Tremuddlewick. Fun for all the family.

A short drive from Bude is the wonderful Tamar Lakes Country Park. There is a variety of activities across the two lakes including bird watching, watersports, angling, walking and relaxing. Don’t forget to stop for a delicious lunch at The Frog Hopper café.
