Accommodation Description
The kitchen / breakfast room features an original exposed stone wall, but is wonderfully light thanks to the large glass archway and door out to the private cobbled courtyard terrace. The kitchen cabinets are oak, and the granite work surface, stone Belfast sink and travertine marble floor, are complemented by Neff, Gaggia and Bosch kitchen appliances to underline the commitment to quality and to marrying genuine traditional materials to the most up-to-date facilities. There is an American-style fridge freezer, a separate wee drinks fridge, single oven, double oven, microwave, halogen hob, large toaster and coffee machine. There is seating for up to six around the expandable island unit in French polished oak.
The kitchen gives way through an open exposed stone arch into the large dining and sitting room with four sofas. There is a separate kids TV room, seating up to a dozen on beanbags and benches - which has a double sofabed for ground floor dining if required. This is located in the old dining room. The lovely French-oak dining room table runs along side the exposed stone wall, and seats 12 ; there is a separate wee games / dining table for another four. We market the house as for 12 adults plus four kids to reflect the main dining table capacity, but some parties have pushed the two tables together to create space for 16 or more!
On the accommodation plan below, the playroom on the ground floor has been removed, giving a much larger living / dining area with big TV. The old dining room, along the corridor to the stairs and next to the sauna, is now a kids playroom / TV room.
Amenities Description
The seven bedrooms in the Old Barn are larger than those in the Mill House next door, but still not enormous. We use the phrase “big enough to swing a kitten” without advocating any animal cruelty. And our bedrooms are actually all kept pet-free, so nobody is allowed to test that.
We prioritised putting large beds in over having large amounts of floor space, so we have super-comfy superking beds in three bedrooms, with pairs of zip-and-link style single divans which can be made up as twin or superking in two more bedrooms. Each of these five bedrooms has a private wash-hand basin, and built in storage for clothes and luggage featuring hanging space and shelving. Four have garden, woodland and hillside views, with one facing out into the courtyard and giving river and forest views.
In addition we have two other bedrooms upstairs. One is a bunk room with two adult sized bunks with courtyard / river aspect, the other a small double facing the woods and hills. Downstairs in the kids play room there is double sofabed.
There is a shower room and toilet downstairs, and the upstairs room share a further two bathrooms, each of which features a bath with shower above and full travertine tiling from floor to ceiling. So with three toilets, three showers, two baths, and nine sinks / wash hand-basins altogether, there is very rarely any queuing for bathrooms at peak times.

About the area
Nestled on a private 22-acre estate high in the hills of Argyll’s Cowal Peninsula, Ormidale House is a majestic historic laird’s retreat. Originally built in 1693, the grand house sleeps up to 35 guests across 13 beautifully appointed bedrooms, blending antique charm with modern comfort. Inside, you’ll find elegant gathering spaces: a formal dining hall, a drawing room with a baby-grand piano, a billiard room, and two relaxing TV lounges.
Outside, the estate feels like a natural playground — woodland trails wind past waterfalls and peaceful river pools, while shared lawns invite croquet and games. A seven-seater hot tub, sauna, sunken trampoline and tennis court bring laid-back luxury. Here, wildlife abounds — spot deer and red squirrels — and with little light pollution, the night sky is a perfect canvas for stargazing. Just 90 minutes from Glasgow, Ormidale is a serene base for hiking, sailing, fishing, and island-hopping around the stunning Kyles of Bute.
A travertine marble floor runs throughout the ground floor and offers a stunning contrast to the original exposed stone walls which feature in the kitchen and living area. All the main bedrooms upstairs have private wash-hand basins, superb quality beds and bedding, built in storage and hanging space and lovely woodland and mountain views. The three bathrooms feature floor to ceiling ivory tiling, natural stone floors, Jacuzzi baths, and contemporary fittings.
The house is underfloor heated – from environmentally friendly ground source / air source heat pumps - throughout on both floors, so whatever time of year you visit, it is a cosy and comfy house with fantastic facilities. Separate kitchen, living / dining and children’s play spaces mean that parties can come together or play apart as they see fit. The next door games cottage, scruffy and characterful in equal measure with exposed stone walls and beams, has ping pong and pool tables and a dart board, and will eat up the teenagers (of whatever age) in the party. The tennis court was resurfaced in 2024. There are 12 bikes available for guest use, and golf clubs as well. The area is fabulous for walking, cycling, sailing, and fishing, just a mile from the top of Loch Riddon and a short drive from the magnificent expanse of Kilbride Bay.
