About the area

The nearest large village to the cottage is Tisbury which is under 3 miles away, and just a short drive away is the beautiful market town of Shaftesbury. You may recognise the view from Gold Hill, which featured in the classic Hovis advert. The town is perfect for strolling through and admiring the superb views over Thomas Hardy’s Wessex country.

If you like your history good and ancient, you’re in the right place. Not only is Stonehenge nearby, with its fascinating, iconic stone circle, you’re also close to Old Sarum, a huge earthwork that dates back to 500BC. The exhibition at Stonehenge itself is a must-see, and if all the history is thirsty work there’s a café here too.

The sweeping, undulating landscapes of the South West are beautiful from any angle, but one memorable way to enjoy them is by taking a flight experience at Compton Abbas Airfield. You can take your pick from a range of classic aircraft. All flights are carefully managed with precautions against Covid in place.

Head south from Willow Cottage and you’ll reach the Jurassic Coast, England’s only natural World Heritage Site. The landscape and sea views are stunning, but what the area is really famous for are the fossils and rock formations. Lulworth Cove is a particularly beautiful part of the coastline, with stunning rock formations. Try to get here early, as it can be busy.

Salisbury has lots to offer for a day out. From the magnificent cathedral, where you can see one of the original copies of the Magna Carta, to the beautiful medieval streets, the city is steeped in history. Stroll down the Town Path to see the spot where John Constable painted his famous masterpiece of the cathedral. Or wander the streets for some serious retail therapy.

The little ones will love experiencing the Safari Drive Through at Longleat House. The journey takes you through a big game park, wolf wood and more. You should be able to spot lions, cheetahs and tigers. Make sure to book in advance – and wind up the windows, as the monkeys can be pesky!

Old Wardour Castle is an evocative ruin that is the perfect setting for a stroll and a picnic. You can climb the circular stairs to the top of the walls, where the view is spectacular. Make sure to book before you come.
